2026 Golden Globe Nominations Spark Surprise, Snubs, and Debate

9 December 2025 Entertainment

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — The 2026 Golden Globe nominations were announced on December 9, unveiling a mix of historic moments, surprising snubs, and some eyebrow-raising choices that have quickly become the talk of Hollywood and fans alike. The annual nominations, which celebrate the best in film and television, also introduced a new category this year, stirring debate over the evolving landscape of entertainment awards.

Cynthia Erivo made history as the first Black woman to receive two nominations in the same category—Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy—for her role in “Wicked: For Good.” This marks a remarkable achievement following her previous nomination for the same role last year. Alongside her, pop icon Ariana Grande earned a nod for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture, further highlighting the film’s strong acting credentials.

Leading the pack with nine nominations, the film “One Battle After Another” dominated the race. The Warner Bros. production received nods across major categories including Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy, acting awards for both lead and supporting roles, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score. Its double supporting actor nominations for Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn underscore the film’s critical acclaim.

Meanwhile, the horror genre made a significant impact with “Sinners,” which garnered seven nominations, including a first-ever Best Actor nod for Michael B. Jordan. The film’s director, Ryan Coogler, also received a nomination, though the film’s supporting cast was notably absent from the supporting categories, a decision that surprised many critics.

Indie studio Neon emerged as a major winner, securing 21 nominations, including five of the six international film nominees. Neon’s international features such as “It Was Just An Accident,” “The Secret Agent,” “Sentimental Value,” and “No Other Choice” earned Best Picture nods, highlighting the studio’s growing influence in global cinema. Warner Bros. Discovery followed with 16 nominations spanning both film and television, reflecting a competitive industry landscape.

Actor Jacob Elordi stood out with two nominations: one for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series or a Motion Picture made for television for “Narrow Road To The Deep End,” and another for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for “Frankenstein.” His dual recognition across formats showcases his versatility.

However, not all films received equal recognition. “Marty Supreme,” despite scoring nominations for Best Actor, Best Screenplay, and Best Comedy or Musical, was notably snubbed in the Best Director and Supporting Actress categories. Timothée Chalamet’s Best Actor nomination contrasted with the absence of director Josh Safdie and actress Gwyneth Paltrow from the ballots, raising eyebrows among industry insiders.

The Box Office Achievement category, designed to spotlight commercially successful films that might otherwise be overlooked, included titles such as “F1,” “Sinners,” Netflix’s popular “K-pop Demon Hunters,” and the yet-to-be-released “Avatar: Fire And Ash.” The inclusion of “K-pop Demon Hunters,” which had a limited theatrical run, and the pre-release nod for “Avatar: Fire And Ash” sparked questions about the criteria, especially amid Netflix’s recent acquisition of Warner Bros. Studios and ongoing debates about the future of theatrical releases versus streaming. More information on box office metrics and streaming impact can be found through the Box Office Data and Federal Communications Commission insights.

Another notable snub was the absence of “Wicked: For Good” from the Best Comedy or Musical category, despite its multiple nominations in acting and music. Fans and critics alike expressed surprise that the beloved musical did not secure a Best Picture nomination. Similarly, “Christy,” the film chronicling boxer Christy Martin’s career, failed to receive any nominations, a disappointment for supporters of the biopic.

Perhaps the most controversial addition to this year’s Golden Globes was the introduction of a Best Podcasts category. The nominees include popular shows such as “Good Hang with Amy Poehler,” “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard,” “Call Her Daddy,” “The Mel Robbins Podcast,” and “Smartless.” The category notably avoided politically charged or controversial podcasts, such as “The Megyn Kelly Show,” signaling a cautious approach by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. This move has generated debate over the blending of traditional film and television awards with emerging media formats. The evolution of media recognition can be further explored through resources like the Library of Congress and National Endowment for the Arts.

As anticipation builds toward the Golden Globe Awards ceremony, these nominations have already sparked lively discussions about representation, industry trends, and the future of entertainment. With a mix of historic achievements and contentious snubs, the 2026 Golden Globes promise to be a compelling reflection of the current cultural moment.
