MANCHESTER, England — November 24, 2025 — Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye was shown a red card after slapping teammate Michael Keane in the face during a Premier League match against Manchester United on Monday night, officials said.

The incident took place in the 13th minute of the game when Gueye and Keane engaged in a heated argument following a turnover by Gueye that allowed Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes to take a shot. The two players confronted each other closely, with Keane shoving Gueye before Gueye responded by slapping Keane.

Referee Tony Harrington immediately issued a red card to Gueye for violent conduct. The decision was reviewed and confirmed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), which deemed Gueye’s action a clear strike to the face of Keane.

Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and winger Illiman Ndiaye intervened to separate the players and defuse the situation. Gueye was sent off and returned to the locker room.

The match continued with Everton managing to take the lead in the 29th minute through a goal by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall. Before the match, Everton was positioned 11th in the Premier League table, while Manchester United was 10th.

The altercation occurred shortly after Fernandes had taken a shot following a pass from Gueye, who had controlled the ball in Everton’s penalty area. Fernandes’ shot did not score but was enough to trigger the confrontation between the Everton teammates.

The Premier League match between Manchester United and Everton was marked by this unusual incident early in the game, which impacted Everton’s lineup for the remainder of the match.
