ICE Seeks Deportation of Finnish Woman Accused of Throwing Coffee on Baby, Mother and Dog in Florida
NEW SMYRNA, Fla. — November 25, 2025 — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is pursuing the deportation of Nina Jaaskelainen, a Finnish national who allegedly threw coffee on a baby, the child’s mother, and their dog during an incident in Florida earlier this month, officials said.
Jaaskelainen was arrested in New Smyrna, Florida, following the November 14 altercation, according to authorities. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident began when Jaaskelainen confronted a mother who was walking with her infant son and dog, reportedly over the dog not being leashed. During the confrontation, Jaaskelainen allegedly threw coffee on the baby, the mother, and their dog.
She was charged with battery and domestic violence and taken to the Volusia County Jail. Jaaskelainen has pleaded not guilty in court, according to FOX35 Orlando.
ICE lodged a detainer against Jaaskelainen to ensure she remains in custody pending deportation proceedings. Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin stated that Jaaskelainen has been in the United States illegally for over two decades, having first entered on a B2 tourist visa on April 17, 1999, which required her to leave by July 16 of that year. Instead, she remained in the country without legal status for 26 years, officials said.
“For over TWO DECADES, Jaaskelainen has been in our country illegally, skirting the law without consequence. Now, a baby, a mother, and a dog have been assaulted by her,” McLaughlin said in a statement. She added that ICE is taking action to prevent further harm to American families.
According to reports, Jaaskelainen told investigators she threw coffee on the dog because it was upsetting her own dog and believed the mother, child, and dog were on her property.
ICE’s action follows the arrest and charges against Jaaskelainen, highlighting the agency’s efforts to detain and deport individuals who violate U.S. immigration laws and are involved in criminal activity.
No further details about the legal proceedings or the outcome of the case have been released.
