FINCASTLE, Va. — November 26, 2025 — Firefighters in Virginia responded to a call to rescue a deer trapped in a water retention pond near the Roanoke Cement plant, officials said.

The Fincastle Volunteer Fire Department’s Company 4 was notified by an animal control deputy from the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office about the deer stranded in the pond. Upon arrival, firefighters found the deer swimming in algae-covered water and unable to find a way out.

Firefighters worked to corral the animal into a corner of the pond and used a lasso to pull it from the water. The deer was not injured and was released at the edge of the property back into the wild, according to the fire department’s social media post.

The rescue highlights the cooperation between local animal control and fire services in responding to wildlife emergencies in the area.
