FDA Official Links Covid-19 Vaccines to Deaths of at Least 10 Children

WASHINGTON — Covid-19 vaccines were related to the deaths of at least 10 children in the United States between 2021 and 2024, according to a memo from a Food and Drug Administration official. Dr. Vinay Prasad, director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, issued the finding in a 3,000-word memo circulated among FDA staff on Friday. The memo, obtained by NBC News, states that staff reviewed 96 reported deaths of children submitted to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System during that period and determined that at least 10 were related to Covid-19 vaccines. Prasad described the finding as a “profound revelation” and said it marked the first time the FDA acknowledged that Covid-19 vaccines have caused deaths among American children. The memo attributes the deaths to myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart. Prasad also recommended revising federal vaccine approval regulations but has not published a peer-reviewed study to support the claims. The memo did not specify the vaccine manufacturers involved, the ages of the children, or any underlying health conditions. The New York Times reported that these details were absent from the document. The findings have drawn criticism from some experts. Dr. Paul Offit, director of the Vaccine Education Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, called the memo “science by press release” and described it as “dangerous” and “irresponsible.” Offit said the memo does not provide sufficient evidence to support the claim that the deaths were related to Covid-19 vaccines. Prasad also accused the FDA of ignoring vaccine safety concerns for several years and suggested that the actual number of vaccine-related deaths among children could be higher. The FDA has not released an official statement regarding the memo or its findings. The issue of vaccine safety, particularly in children, remains a subject of ongoing debate and investigation.
