Trump Urges Senate Republicans to End Filibuster Citing Eric Holder’s Supreme Court Comments

WASHINGTON, D.C. — December 2, 2025 — Former President Donald Trump is pressing Senate Republicans to eliminate the filibuster, citing recent comments by former Attorney General Eric Holder regarding potential Democratic plans to expand the Supreme Court.

In a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump shared a video featuring Holder, who served under former President Barack Obama, discussing the possibility that Democrats might consider increasing the number of Supreme Court justices if they secure a “trifecta”—control of the presidency and both chambers of Congress—in the 2028 elections. Holder made these remarks during a conversation with Ben Meiselas, co-founder of MeidasTouch, which released the video last month.

Trump referred to Holder as an “Obama sycophant” and highlighted Holder’s assertion that Democrats could seek to appoint up to 21 justices, far exceeding the 15 justices previously discussed by some Democrats. Trump characterized this as a threat to the Constitution and argued that Republicans would be powerless to stop such a move unless they abolish the filibuster.

“It will be 21, they will destroy our Constitution, and there’s not a thing that the Republicans can do about it unless we TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, which will lead to an easy WIN of the Midterms, and an even easier WIN in the Presidential Election of 2028,” Trump wrote.

He further urged Republicans to act swiftly, stating, “Why would the Republicans even think about giving them this opportunity? The American People don’t want gridlock, they want their Leaders to GET THINGS DONE — TERMINATE THE FILIBUSTER, AND HAVE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL FOUR YEARS IN THE HISTORY OF OUR COUNTRY, BY FAR, WITH NOT EVEN THE HINT OF A SHUTDOWN OF OUR GREAT NATION ON JANUARY 30TH!”

The filibuster is a Senate rule that requires a supermajority of 60 votes to advance most legislation, effectively allowing a minority to block bills. Its elimination would enable the Senate majority to pass legislation with a simple majority.

Trump’s call aligns with ongoing debates within the Republican Party about how to respond to Democratic initiatives and legislative priorities. Senate Republicans have faced pressure from some party members and allies to consider changes to Senate rules, including the filibuster, to counter Democratic proposals.

The discussion around Supreme Court expansion has been a contentious issue in U.S. politics, with some Democrats advocating for increasing the number of justices to balance the court’s ideological composition. Holder’s comments have added fuel to this debate, prompting responses from both parties.

Trump’s post comes amid broader political maneuvering ahead of the 2026 midterm elections and the 2028 presidential race, as Republicans seek strategies to regain or maintain influence in Congress and the White House.

The former president’s remarks were made public through social media and have been covered by various news outlets, reflecting ongoing partisan tensions over judicial appointments and Senate procedures.
