DERBY, England — December 5, 2025 — Authorities in Derby, a city in central England, evacuated nearly 200 homes Thursday as police carried out an operation related to suspected explosives. Two men, aged in their 40s and 50s, were arrested on suspicion of explosives offenses following the execution of a warrant on Vulcan Street, officials said.

Derbyshire Constabulary stated the evacuations were a precautionary measure based on intelligence regarding materials found at the address. The two suspects, identified as Polish nationals, remain in police custody. Authorities have not released further details about their identities.

The British Army’s Explosive Ordnance Division conducted a controlled explosion at the scene. Residents were warned they might hear a loud bang during the procedure. Police emphasized that the incident is not being treated as a terrorism investigation and assured the public there is no ongoing risk to the surrounding community.

Officials advised residents in the evacuation zone to prepare to be away from their homes for up to 24 hours. Officers have been knocking on doors to ensure the area is clear, and those who have evacuated or are not at home were encouraged to contact Derbyshire Constabulary via their Facebook page or the 101 non-emergency number if they cannot access social media.

A local teenager described the evacuation as shocking, recounting how he quickly left his home and alerted neighbors. The incident has drawn significant attention in the area, but police continue to stress that the situation is under control and that public safety remains the priority.
