Trump and Musk’s DOGE Initiative Leaves Social Security Staffing at Six-Decade Low

8 December 2025 Opinion

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a striking reversal from campaign promises to protect Social Security, President Donald Trump’s collaboration with Elon Musk’s DOGE initiative has resulted in severe staffing reductions at the Social Security Administration (SSA), pushing the agency to its lowest personnel levels in 60 years. This unprecedented depletion of staff has imperiled the agency’s ability to deliver essential services to millions of Americans who depend on their monthly benefits as a critical lifeline.

The SSA, which has operated for over 90 years without missing a monthly benefit payment, now faces challenges that threaten its historic reliability. Despite the agency’s best efforts to maintain operations, the deep cuts have led to longer wait times for beneficiaries seeking assistance either in field offices or via the SSA’s 1-800 hotline. The strain on customer service and claims processing is palpable, especially as the number of active beneficiaries swells with the aging baby boomer population.

Public outcry and pressure from congressional Democrats prevented an even more devastating 50% reduction in staffing and the closure of numerous field offices, which had been proposed earlier this year. Yet, the damage inflicted remains significant. The agency’s depleted workforce struggles to keep pace with demand, and many Americans report difficulty accessing timely support.

Compounding these operational challenges are policy changes that have eroded the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 64 million Medicare recipients. Due to Trump’s Medicare price hikes, beneficiaries will see reduced Social Security benefits in 2026, marking the sharpest COLA erosion in nearly a decade. Notably, this is the first time Medicare premiums have surpassed $200 per month, further squeezing seniors’ budgets.

Advocates warn that the combination of staffing cuts and benefit reductions places vulnerable populations at risk. The SSA’s diminished capacity has led to tragic consequences, including increased mortality rates among those awaiting initial disability determinations — a situation not seen since the disability program’s inception under President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956.

Moreover, concerns about data security have surfaced, as Trump and the DOGE initiative have reportedly jeopardized the personal information of approximately 300 million Americans held by the SSA. This breach of trust exacerbates fears about the agency’s ability to safeguard sensitive information amidst operational turmoil.

While the Trump administration maintains that the SSA is functioning effectively, the experiences of millions of beneficiaries tell a different story. The agency’s current state represents a stark departure from its historic role as a dependable source of support for American families.

Experts and lawmakers alike are calling for immediate restoration of funding and staffing to the SSA to prevent further deterioration of services. The intertwined nature of healthcare and Social Security benefits underscores the urgency of reversing these cuts to protect the welfare of millions.
