Michigan Police Seek Owner of Friendly Pig Found Wandering in Mobile Home Park
SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Police in Saginaw Township are on the lookout for the owner of a small, amiable pig that was found wandering loose in the Lawndale Estates mobile home park earlier this week. The approximately 20-pound pig was first spotted approaching a resident shoveling snow on Wednesday morning, prompting local authorities to step in.
According to Sgt. Brian Anderson of the Saginaw Township Police Department, the pig is believed to be a pet that escaped from a nearby residence. “It’s definitely a pet because it actually smells like vanilla,” Anderson told Spectrum Local News. “I don’t know if they sprayed perfume on it or something, but I mean it’s well cared for.” The unusual scent and the pig’s friendly demeanor suggest it has been well looked after.
Officers humorously referred to the pig as their “newest recruit” in a social media post, highlighting the lighthearted side of the encounter. The Saginaw Township Police Department continues to accept applications, but for now, their priority is to reunite the pig with its rightful owner.
The pig is currently under the care of Saginaw County Animal Control, which is managing its welfare while officials attempt to locate the owner. Animal control agencies often handle such cases, ensuring the safety and health of found animals while complying with local regulations. The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development oversees animal welfare standards in the state and supports local agencies in these efforts.
Cases of escaped pets, including pigs, are not unheard of in Michigan and across the country. Domestic pigs can be popular pets, prized for their intelligence and affectionate nature, but they require specific care and secure environments to prevent them from wandering off. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals provides guidelines on pet pig care and emphasizes the importance of microchipping and proper fencing to avoid such incidents.
Residents in the area are encouraged to check their properties and report any missing animals to the Saginaw Township Police Department or Saginaw County Animal Control. Authorities hope that by publicizing the pig’s discovery, the owner will come forward promptly.
For more information on animal control and lost pets, individuals can visit the Saginaw County Animal Control website or contact local law enforcement. Meanwhile, the pig remains safe and cared for, awaiting a reunion with its family.
