Tensions Escalate as Syrian Military Chants Signal Possible Conflict with Israel

12 December 2025 World

DAMASCUS, Syria — A recent military parade in Damascus has reignited fears of escalating conflict in the Middle East after Syrian soldiers were recorded chanting vehement anti-Israel slogans. The chilling footage, verified independently by Fox News Digital, shows Syrian troops voicing a jihadi declaration of war, prompting a stern warning from Israeli officials that war may be unavoidable.

During the parade marking the first anniversary of former President Bashar al-Assad’s fall, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa was present as soldiers marched through the capital chanting, “Gaza, Gaza, our rallying cry, Victory and steadfastness, night & day. We rise against you, enemy, we rise. From mountains of fire we make our way. From my blood I forge my ammunition. From your blood, rivers will flow.” The stark rhetoric has raised alarms in Jerusalem, with Amichai Chikli, Israel’s Minister of Diaspora Affairs, posting on X that “War is inevitable.”

Chikli further condemned the Syrian regime, drawing parallels to ISIS for its brutal tactics. “The harrowing testimonies coming from our Druze brothers about what is happening in Sweida leave no doubt. A regime that kills like ISIS, rapes like ISIS, and destroys like ISIS everything that is not itself — it is ISIS, even if it wears a suit and plays basketball,” he said in a statement to Fox News Digital. This rhetoric underscores the deep mistrust and animosity that continue to plague relations between the two nations.

Meanwhile, the United States is actively mediating complex negotiations between Damascus and Jerusalem in an effort to stabilize the region. Last month, President al-Sharaa met with former President Donald Trump at the White House, signaling a tentative opening for dialogue. Tom Barrack, U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy to Syria, addressed the situation at a Jerusalem Post conference in Washington, D.C., emphasizing that Damascus is not currently seeking aggression toward Israel. He noted, “Syria joining the anti-ISIS coalition was unthinkable not long ago,” highlighting recent cooperative efforts against extremist groups.

Barrack also revealed that the U.S. and Syrian forces have recently dismantled nine Hezbollah cells and several Islamic State cells, efforts aimed at curbing terrorism in the volatile region. However, he acknowledged the profound mistrust following the events of October 7, stating, “After Oct. 7, Israel doesn’t trust anyone. That’s why we’ve offered to serve as a peacekeeping force. Verification replaces trust.”

The U.S. initiative seeks to create a security framework that could prevent further hostilities, but the aggressive military chants and the Syrian government’s hardline stance complicate these efforts. Analysts warn that Syria represents “the softest play” in the Middle East’s intricate security puzzle, with both Damascus and Jerusalem facing limited alternatives if they wish to avoid a protracted conflict.

As tensions mount, international observers are closely monitoring developments. The U.S. Department of State continues to engage diplomatically, while the Department of Defense remains vigilant about regional security. The United Nations Security Council has also expressed concern over the potential for renewed hostilities.

For now, the Middle East stands at a precarious crossroads. The Syrian military’s provocative display and Israel’s resolute warnings underscore the fragile nature of peace in the region, even as diplomatic channels remain open. The coming weeks will be critical in determining whether dialogue can prevail over discord, or if the ominous chants heard in Damascus will herald a new chapter of conflict.
