Person of Interest Taken Into Custody After Deadly Brown University Shooting
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Authorities have apprehended a person of interest in connection with the deadly shooting at Brown University that claimed two lives and injured nine others. Providence Chief of Police Colonel Oscar Perez Jr. announced on Sunday that the individual, a man in his twenties, was located and taken into custody at a hotel in Coventry, approximately 17 miles south of Providence.
The shooting unfolded Saturday in the university’s engineering building during final exams, a time when students were preparing for the winter break. The incident plunged the campus into chaos, prompting immediate shelter-in-place orders that have since been lifted both by Brown University and the city of Providence.
At a press conference, Colonel Perez refrained from confirming any affiliation between the suspect and Brown University, citing the early stage of the investigation. He emphasized that law enforcement efforts are now focused on collaborating with prosecutors, gathering evidence, and conducting interviews to build a comprehensive case.
Providence Mayor Brett Smiley expressed the city’s commitment to justice and support for the victims. “Our two priorities as of last night were to, one, bring the individual responsible to justice and that investigation is ongoing, although we have a meaningful update that we’ve just provided. Two, is our concern for the victims who, as I mentioned, are still – most of whom are still hospitalized. That remains our priority right now,” Smiley said.
According to the mayor, seven victims remain in stable condition, one is in critical but stable condition, and one has been discharged. Rhode Island Governor Daniel McKee extended his condolences to the families affected by the tragedy, urging the community to come together in support during this difficult time.
Brown University President Christina Paxson acknowledged the long road to recovery ahead for the campus community. She highlighted the availability of religious life staff and student services as vital resources for those impacted by the shooting. “Our priority in the coming months is to bring people back together and ensure they feel safe and supported,” Paxson said.
The incident has drawn attention to the ongoing issue of campus safety and the challenges faced by institutions nationwide. The university, part of the Ivy League, now joins a troubling list of elite campuses grappling with gun violence.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The Providence Police Department is working closely with state and federal agencies to ensure a thorough inquiry. The public is encouraged to stay informed through official channels such as the Providence Police Department and the Brown University website.
For updates on public safety and emergency management, residents can refer to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Rhode Island Department of Education, which are coordinating support efforts for affected students and families.
This tragic event underscores the critical need for continued vigilance and community resilience in the face of violence. As the investigation unfolds, the city of Providence and Brown University remain focused on healing and justice.
