U.S. Issues Travel Alert as Armed Conflict Escalates Along Thailand-Cambodia Border

BANGKOK, Thailand — The U.S. government has issued a stern travel alert warning American tourists to avoid the border region between Thailand and Cambodia, citing an unpredictable and escalating armed conflict that has already claimed dozens of lives and displaced thousands. The U.S. Embassy in Thailand released the alert on December 16, urging U.S. citizens to steer clear of all travel within 50 kilometers (approximately 31 miles) of the border due to active hostilities and volatile security conditions.

Fighting erupted on December 7 over a long-contested boundary that has roots in colonial-era territorial disputes. The conflict has since intensified, with both Thai and Cambodian forces engaging in clashes that have resulted in over a dozen fatalities on each side. The violence has forced more than half a million people to flee their homes, according to reports from international agencies.

The border area is a popular destination for tourists, drawn to its scenic landscapes and cultural sites. The Thai town of Aranyaprathet and Cambodia’s Poipet serve as major crossings for travelers and trade. However, the recent fighting has disrupted normal activity and heightened risks for visitors. The U.S. Embassy cautioned that it has limited capacity to provide emergency services in the affected zone and advised travelers already in the region to follow instructions from local Thai security authorities closely.

This latest flare-up follows a fragile ceasefire brokered in October by former President Donald Trump, which had temporarily halted hostilities after five days of fighting in July. Despite the agreement, tensions have persisted, with reports last month of Thai soldiers injured by land mines in disputed areas prompting Thailand to suspend parts of the ceasefire implementation.

The territorial dispute traces back to conflicting interpretations of French colonial-era maps, which Thailand disputes, fueling a long history of rivalry between the two kingdoms. The ongoing conflict threatens to destabilize a region that welcomed over 24 million international tourists in the first nine months of 2025, according to Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Travelers are reminded to consult official sources such as the U.S. Department of State’s travel advisories for the latest security updates. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also provides health and safety information pertinent to visitors in Southeast Asia. For those planning travel in the region, the Transportation Security Administration offers guidance on security protocols, while the U.S. Embassy in Thailand remains a critical resource for American citizens abroad.

As the situation evolves, officials emphasize the importance of vigilance and caution, underscoring the unpredictable nature of the conflict and its potential impact on civilian populations and international visitors alike.
