Instagram Empowers Users with New AI Tool to Customize Reels Feed
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Instagram has unveiled a new AI-powered feature called “Your Algorithm” that gives users unprecedented control over the videos that appear in their Reels feed. Rolled out initially in the United States with plans for a global English-language launch, the tool allows users to see and adjust the topics shaping their video recommendations in real time, marking a significant shift in how social media platforms personalize content.
Reels, Instagram’s short-form video section, has become a central part of the app’s user engagement strategy, competing with platforms like TikTok. However, users have often expressed frustration over the lack of transparency and control over the algorithm that determines what content they see. Instagram’s new feature addresses these concerns by providing a clear window into the AI-driven topics influencing each user’s feed.
To access the tool, users tap the Reels icon at the bottom of the app, then select a small icon resembling two lines with hearts in the upper right corner of any Reel. This opens the “Your Algorithm” dashboard, where the app displays a list of topics it believes align with the user’s interests. Users can then fine-tune their preferences by adding topics they want to see more or less of, allowing the feed to update dynamically based on these inputs.
“Your Algorithm” also includes a sharing feature that lets users post their personalized topic list to their Instagram Story, either publicly or to a select group of friends. This social element encourages users to share their interests and discover new creators aligned with their tastes.
Instagram’s move to empower users with direct control over their content feed reflects a broader trend in social media toward transparency and user agency. The company has indicated plans to extend this level of control to other parts of the app, such as the Explore tab, further enhancing user customization.
Experts note that giving users the ability to shape their algorithmic experience could reduce the prevalence of irrelevant or unwanted content, potentially improving user satisfaction and engagement. This approach aligns with recommendations from the Federal Trade Commission, which has advocated for greater transparency in algorithmic decision-making to protect consumer interests.
As social media platforms increasingly rely on artificial intelligence to curate content, tools like Instagram’s “Your Algorithm” represent a step toward balancing automated personalization with user control. The initiative also resonates with ongoing discussions at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration about responsible AI deployment and user empowerment in digital environments.
Users interested in enhancing their online safety and privacy can also consult resources from the National Cybersecurity Alliance, which provides guidance on managing digital footprints and securing personal data.
Instagram’s update arrives amid growing scrutiny of social media’s impact on mental health and information consumption, with policymakers and advocacy groups calling for tools that help users curate healthier and more relevant content streams. By putting algorithmic control into users’ hands, Instagram aims to foster a more personalized and engaging experience that evolves alongside individual interests.
