Vikings’ Quarterback J.J. McCarthy Exits Game with Hand Injury Amid Turnover
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy was forced to leave Sunday’s game against the New York Giants after sustaining a hand injury during a critical turnover in the second quarter. The injury occurred when McCarthy dropped back to pass and was immediately pressured by Giants linebacker Brian Burns, who forced a fumble that was scooped up and returned for a touchdown by Giants defensive back Tyler Nubin.
McCarthy, a second-year player, was visibly in pain as he was examined on the sideline before heading to the locker room prior to halftime. At that point, the Vikings held a narrow 13-10 lead. Before his exit, McCarthy completed 9 of 14 passes for 108 yards and threw one interception. He also contributed on the ground with a 12-yard rushing touchdown that helped extend the Vikings’ lead earlier in the quarter.
This injury adds to a string of physical setbacks McCarthy has endured throughout the 2025 NFL season. He previously suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 2 against the Atlanta Falcons, which sidelined him until Week 9. Additionally, McCarthy missed Week 13’s contest versus the Seattle Seahawks due to a concussion. Despite flashes of promising play, his season has been marked by inconsistency and missed time, complicating the Vikings’ offensive rhythm.
One persistent question this season has been McCarthy’s connection with star wide receiver Justin Jefferson, which has yet to fully materialize. The Vikings entered Week 16 with a 6-8 record, facing mounting pressure to secure a playoff berth. With McCarthy sidelined, backup Max Brosmer took over quarterback duties for the remainder of the game.
The Vikings’ medical and coaching staff are expected to evaluate McCarthy’s hand injury further in the coming days to determine his availability for upcoming games. The team’s performance and playoff hopes hinge significantly on the health and effectiveness of their young quarterback.
