World’s Largest Nativity Scene Returns to Alicante with Record-Breaking Figures
ALICANTE, Spain — The holiday spirit shines brighter than ever in Alicante’s Town Hall Square, where the world’s largest nativity scene has returned for the Christmas season, captivating visitors from across the globe. First unveiled in 2020, this monumental display has earned a Guinness World Record for the tallest nativity set, featuring holy figures of unprecedented scale that embody the true meaning of Christmas.
The centerpiece of the scene is a Baby Jesus figure measuring an astonishing 10 feet, 10.7 inches in height and 10 feet, 10.3 inches in width, stretching over 13 feet in length. This oversized infant lies serenely in his manger, watched over by Mary and Joseph, whose statues tower above the square. Joseph stands an impressive 59 feet, 2.6 inches tall and spans about 15 feet wide, while Mary reaches 34 feet, 8.9 inches high and 11 feet, 5.4 inches wide. These figures transform the traditional nativity scene into a breathtaking spectacle that has become a must-see attraction during the holiday season.
Since its opening on November 23, the Giant Nativity Scene has welcomed families and tourists eager to experience its grandeur firsthand. Visitors stroll through the festive display, often pausing to capture photographs of the towering holy family. The Alicante tourism board, which oversees the installation, highlights the scene’s role in reconnecting communities with the spiritual roots of Christmas. As one visitor expressed on social media, “It’s beautiful. It’s time we reconnect with the true meaning of Christmas.”
The nativity scene’s return coincides with renewed Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem, the historic birthplace of Jesus, where festivities had been paused for two years due to conflict in the region. Manger Square in Bethlehem, named for the manger where Jesus was laid, has resumed its traditional celebrations, marked by a procession led by Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin patriarch of Jerusalem. He called for “a Christmas full of light,” emphasizing the collective hope for peace and unity during the holiday season.
