Trump to Make Final Decision on Ukraine Peace Deal Ahead of Zelenskyy Meeting

27 December 2025 Politics

PALM BEACH, Fla. — President Donald Trump announced Friday that he will have the final say on any peace agreement aimed at ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, ahead of a scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy this Sunday. The meeting, set to take place at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, comes as Zelenskyy prepares to unveil a comprehensive 20-point peace plan that he described as nearly complete.

“He doesn’t have anything until I approve it,” Trump told Politico, emphasizing his role in shaping the outcome of the negotiations. Zelenskyy, speaking to reporters on Friday, confirmed the upcoming meeting and said the discussions would likely focus on security guarantees for Ukraine, though it remains uncertain whether territorial issues will be addressed. “The 20-point plan that we worked on is 90% ready,” Zelenskyy said. “Our task is to make sure that everything is 100% ready. It is not easy, and no one says that it will be 100% right away, but nevertheless we must bring the desired result closer with each such meeting, each such conversation.”

The conflict, which has drawn global attention and involved multiple rounds of diplomacy, remains a focal point of international security concerns. The U.S. Department of State has consistently supported Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, while urging a peaceful resolution. Experts have expressed skepticism about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s willingness to compromise, even as talks advance.

Trump expressed optimism about his upcoming conversations with both Zelenskyy and Putin. “I think it’s going to go good with him. I think it’s going to go good with [Vladimir] Putin,” Trump told Politico, adding that he expects to speak with Putin “soon.” This marks a notable shift from his November stance, when he indicated he would not meet with either leader unless a peace deal was near completion.

Zelenskyy also highlighted recent diplomatic progress, citing a “very good conversation” with Jared Kushner and U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, focusing on ending the war and securing lasting peace. The White House has yet to confirm the meeting officially, but the engagement signals a renewed push toward resolving the conflict.

The stakes remain high as Ukraine faces ongoing security challenges, including Russian military incursions that test NATO’s boundaries, according to reports from allied states and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The proposed peace plan’s details have not been fully disclosed, but Zelenskyy’s emphasis on security guarantees underscores Kyiv’s priority to safeguard its sovereignty.

Trump’s involvement in the peace process reflects his broader foreign policy approach, which has included multiple meetings with Zelenskyy since taking office in January 2025, including a notable Oval Office encounter in February. His willingness to engage directly with both Ukrainian and Russian leaders may influence the trajectory of the conflict’s resolution.

As the world watches closely, the outcome of the Mar-a-Lago meeting could shape the future of Eastern Europe’s security landscape. The White House and international partners remain attentive to developments, hopeful for a breakthrough that could end years of hostilities.
