Western Leaders Urged to Confront Rising Islamist-Inspired Antisemitic Violence

31 December 2025 Opinion

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Over the past two years, antisemitic violence inspired by Islamist extremism has surged across the Western world, marking a disturbing shift in the security landscape for Jewish communities. From deadly attacks in Washington, D.C., Colorado, the United Kingdom, and Australia’s Bondi Beach to increasingly hostile campus protests, the rise in such violence has been described by experts and Jewish organizations as the “new normal.”

On October 7, 2023, the U.S.-designated terrorist group Hamas launched a devastating assault on Israel, killing approximately 1,200 civilians and taking 251 hostages. This brutal attack reverberated globally, sparking a wave of antisemitic rhetoric and violence fueled by Islamist supporters and sympathizers. The last of the living hostages were freed after nearly two years, yet the scars of that day continue to shape the threat landscape.

Following the attack, Iran-backed Islamist groups and their affiliates intensified antisemitic campaigns worldwide. This included violent street protests, aggressive social media campaigns, and campus demonstrations that often blurred the line between legitimate political discourse and hate speech. Chants such as “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” and “globalize the intifada” have re-emerged with alarming frequency. The U.S. House of Representatives has officially designated the former chant as antisemitic, while the latter is widely interpreted as a call for violence against Jews globally.

Incidents of antisemitic violence have soared dramatically. According to data compiled by Jewish monitoring organizations, antisemitic incidents worldwide increased by 340% between 2022 and 2024. This alarming trend includes a series of high-profile attacks, such as the May 2025 shooting at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., which claimed the lives of two Israeli Embassy staff members, and a terror attack in Boulder, Colorado, in June 2025 that left one woman dead and several others injured.

Experts warn that the normalization and tolerance of antisemitic rhetoric by Western governments and societies exacerbate the problem. Islamist-inspired antisemitism is not the sole threat; extremist groups on both the left and right also contribute to the hostile environment. However, the Islamist-adjacent violence has been particularly lethal and persistent.

Amichai Chikli, Israel’s Minister of Diaspora Affairs, recently criticized Australian officials for overlooking warning signs prior to the Bondi Beach terror attack, emphasizing the need for proactive government intervention. The call to action is echoed by numerous academic think tanks and Jewish advocacy groups, which stress that protecting Jewish communities is paramount to safeguarding broader societal stability.

As history has repeatedly shown, when Jews are targeted by extremists, other minority groups and the general public often follow. Western leaders now face mounting pressure to implement comprehensive strategies that address the roots of Islamist-inspired antisemitism, improve intelligence sharing, and strengthen community protections.

For more information on efforts to combat antisemitism, the Anti-Defamation League provides extensive resources and data. The Federal Bureau of Investigation actively investigates hate crimes, including antisemitic violence, while the Department of Homeland Security coordinates national responses to such threats. Additionally, the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor monitors global antisemitic incidents and advocates for international cooperation.

Without decisive action, experts warn, the current wave of Islamist-inspired antisemitic violence may only expand, threatening not only Jewish communities but the fabric of Western societies at large.
