Google Introduces Long-Awaited Gmail Address Change Feature Without Data Loss
NEW YORK, N.Y. — For nearly two decades, Gmail users have faced a frustrating limitation: once a Gmail address was created, it was permanent. Changing the primary email meant creating a new account and losing years of emails, Google Drive files, photos, and purchase records. That era is now over. Google has begun rolling out a highly anticipated feature allowing users to change their @gmail.com address without losing any associated data.
This new capability means that Gmail’s nearly 2 billion active users can update their email addresses to better reflect their current identity, profession, or life circumstances without starting from scratch. Whether someone wants to move on from an old address tied to a previous job, a past relationship, or a location, they can now do so seamlessly while preserving their digital history.
According to the rollout details, when users change their Gmail address, their inbox and email history remain intact. Google Drive files and folders, Google Photos backups, and purchase history and subscriptions linked to the account also stay exactly where they are. The original email address does not disappear; instead, Google automatically converts it into an alias. This means emails sent to either the old or new address will arrive in the same inbox, and users can sign in using either email.
Google has implemented safeguards to prevent misuse and confusion. After changing an address, users cannot create another new Gmail address on that same account for 12 months. However, switching back to the original address is allowed at any time. Users should note that third-party websites where they use “Sign in with Google” may require re-authentication, and Chromebook or Chrome Remote Desktop users might need to sign in again.
Before making the switch, Google recommends backing up important data and reviewing connected apps. The feature is being rolled out gradually and may not be available to all users immediately. To check availability, users can visit their Google Account settings on a computer.
This update comes as part of Google’s broader efforts to enhance user control and flexibility.
