Ole Miss Coach Joe Judge Reflects on Coaching Chaos, Citing Aaron Hernandez and NFL Turmoil
OXFORD, Miss. — The swirling coaching upheaval surrounding LSU and Ole Miss as they navigate the College Football Playoff has prompted Ole Miss quarterbacks coach Joe Judge to reflect on his own experiences with chaos in professional football. Judge, who coached in the NFL and was once a neighbor to former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez, offered a candid perspective on managing distractions amid turmoil.
Judge’s comments came as LSU coaches who had previously left for Ole Miss alongside Lane Kiffin remain involved with the Rebels during the playoff run, creating a complex coaching landscape. When asked about the challenges of such instability, Judge referenced his time in New England, where he lived next door to Hernandez during the period leading up to Hernandez’s arrest and subsequent conviction for the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd.
“My next-door neighbor was Aaron Hernandez,” Judge said, according to CBS Sports. “I know this is still more chaotic.” Hernandez’s case, which shocked the sports world, involved intense media scrutiny and police investigations that even brought detectives knocking on Judge’s door in search of Hernandez. “If you watch those documentaries, my house is on the TV next door,” Judge added. “The detectives knocked on my door to find out where he was. I didn’t know. We just kind of talked to the organization. But it was obviously chaotic.”
Despite the extraordinary nature of that situation, Judge drew lessons from how players and staff managed to maintain focus amid the turmoil. “Those players that year handled that extremely well. Came out of that chaos, and we had some really good direction inside with some veterans and some different guys,” he explained. “You have something like that happen — how do you handle something like that? How do you deal with something like that? So you keep the focus on what you can handle, what you can control, which at that time was football for us, and we went through the stretch, and we were able to have success that year.”
Judge also compared the current coaching complications to the unpredictability he faced as head coach of the New York Giants during the 2020 NFL season, when COVID-19 outbreaks caused sudden absences and uncertainty about player availability. “I would have no idea who would be available due to surprise positive COVID-19 tests,” he said, underscoring the challenge of maintaining team cohesion amid external disruptions.
Ole Miss is set to face Miami in the Fiesta Bowl, a marquee matchup in the College Football Playoff, further intensifying the spotlight on the Rebels’ coaching situation. The ongoing drama involving LSU coaches and the Rebels has added layers of complexity to preparations.
Joe Judge’s reflections highlight the broader theme of resilience in sports leadership, especially when confronted with unprecedented challenges. His firsthand experience with the Hernandez case, coupled with navigating the pandemic-impacted NFL season, offers a unique lens on how teams can persevere through chaos.
