Two Florida Teens Die in Tragic Sandpit Collapse Near Tampa

16 January 2026 U.S. News

INVERNESS, Fla. — A close-knit Florida community is mourning the loss of two 14-year-old boys, George Watts and Derrick Hubbard, who died after a sandpit tunnel they were digging collapsed on them near Sportsman’s Park in Inverness, about 70 miles north of Tampa. The tragedy occurred on January 11, 2026, during what was meant to be a day of outdoor play and fun.

According to the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office, the boys were digging a hole and tunnel in the sandpit when the sand suddenly gave way at a depth of roughly five feet, burying both teens. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but despite their efforts, the boys could not be saved.

Corey Edwards, who coached both boys in the local 352 Legends program, expressed profound sorrow over the loss. “They were just kids,” Edwards said. “They were just kids doing what we try to tell kids to do, ‘Get outside and play.’”

Authorities have not indicated any foul play and described the incident as a tragic accident. The dangers of digging deep tunnels or holes in sand are well documented by safety agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Safety Council, which warn about the risk of sand collapses and recommend close supervision of children near sand pits and beaches.

The community has rallied around the families of George and Derrick, with memorials and fundraisers set up to honor the boys’ memories. The tragedy has also sparked renewed calls for public awareness about the hidden hazards of sand tunnels, especially in popular recreational areas.

Local officials are reviewing safety measures at Sportsman’s Park and other nearby recreational sites to prevent similar accidents. The Florida State Parks department provides guidelines for safe beach and park activities, emphasizing the importance of adult supervision and caution when digging in sand.

This heartbreaking event serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable dangers that can arise even during innocent play. As the community grieves, officials urge parents and guardians to educate children about the risks associated with digging tunnels or deep holes in sand, and to always monitor outdoor activities closely.

For more information on beach and sand safety, the public can consult resources provided by the CDC and the National Safety Council. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident and offer support to the affected families.
