Freedom Plane to Tour America’s Rare Founding Documents for 250th Anniversary
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a unique tribute to the nation’s 250th anniversary, a Boeing 737, aptly named the Freedom Plane, will carry some of America’s most treasured founding documents on a nationwide tour. Beginning this March and continuing through August, the aircraft will visit eight cities, giving citizens across the country a rare opportunity to witness original artifacts that shaped the United States.
The Freedom Plane initiative is a collaboration between the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and the National Archives Foundation (NAF). Among the priceless items aboard is the original 1823 engraving of the Declaration of Independence, one of approximately 50 known copies produced by engraver William J. Stone at the behest of then-Secretary of State John Quincy Adams. This engraving represents an enduring symbol of the nation’s founding principles.
In addition to the Declaration engraving, the Freedom Plane will carry the draft of the U.S. Constitution, providing a rare glimpse into the document’s formative stages. The tour will span major cities including Kansas City, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Houston, Denver, Miami, Dearborn, and Seattle. Each stop will feature public exhibitions allowing visitors to engage directly with these historic documents.
