Connecticut Firefighters Rescue Stranded Swan from Frozen Norwalk River
NORWALK, Conn. — Firefighters in Norwalk, Connecticut, responded promptly on Tuesday to a call about a swan stranded on the ice of the frozen Norwalk River near the Wall Street Bridge. The bird had ventured onto the ice but became stuck, unable to free itself as temperatures remained frigid. Crews from the Norwalk Fire Department donned cold-water rescue suits to carefully enter the icy waters and reach the distressed animal. According to the department’s social media update, the firefighters successfully freed the swan from the surrounding ice and brought it safely to shore without incident.
The rescued swan was immediately transported to the VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center, where veterinarian Melissa Salgado provided an update on its condition. “The swan is stable,” Salgado told the CT Examiner. “There were blocks of ice attached to him which we had to melt off using warm water, and he was given food and water. He’s doing well and warming up. He has no serious wounds.” The swan will remain under veterinary observation until it is deemed healthy enough to be released back into the wild.
