Florida Lyft Driver Arrested for Strangulation and Threats During Ride
TAMPA, Fla. — A Florida Lyft driver was taken into custody after a harrowing incident in which he allegedly strangled and threatened to kill a passenger during a ride last October. Joaquin Mena Vazquez, 27, faces serious charges including battery by strangulation and false imprisonment, following an attack inside his vehicle that left the victim fearing for her life.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reported that on October 8, 2025, Mena Vazquez picked up a woman and unexpectedly pulled into a grassy area instead of continuing the ride. According to the sheriff’s office, the driver then climbed into the backseat and began choking the passenger while issuing threats to kill her. The victim, demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, managed to convince Mena Vazquez to stop the assault, allowing her to escape the vehicle.
