New Surveillance Footage Reveals Armed Figure at Nancy Guthrie’s Home Before Disappearance
TUCSON, Ariz. — Authorities have released unsettling surveillance footage showing a masked and armed individual at the home of Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie, in the ongoing investigation into her disappearance. The FBI disclosed the images on Tuesday, more than a week after the 84-year-old was reported missing from her residence outside Tucson.
The black-and-white footage, captured by a surveillance camera mounted on Guthrie’s front door, depicts a person wearing a ski mask, gloves, and carrying a backpack, with what appears to be a pistol holstered at their waist. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the individual approached the house with their head bowed, then appeared to tamper with the camera by attempting to cover its lens with vegetation.
“Working with our partners — as of this morning, law enforcement has uncovered these previously inaccessible new images showing an armed individual appearing to have tampered with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door the morning of her disappearance,” Director Patel wrote in an online post. The footage shows the camera was disconnected around 1:47 a.m. on February 1, shortly before movement was detected by the device’s software.
Authorities have explained that Guthrie’s doorbell camera was not actively subscribed to a video-saving service, which initially prevented investigators from accessing footage. However, through collaboration with private sector partners, the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department have recovered additional video that sheds new light on the timeline of events.
Blood matching Nancy Guthrie’s DNA was found on her front porch, and investigators believe she was taken against her will sometime between the night of January 31 and the early hours of February 1. Despite the release of the new footage, no suspects, persons of interest, or vehicles have been identified in connection with her disappearance.
Savannah Guthrie has publicly appealed for assistance in finding her mother, sharing the surveillance images on social media and expressing hope for her safe return. “We believe she is still alive. Bring her home,” she wrote on Instagram. In a video posted Monday, she conveyed the urgency of the situation, stating, “We are at an hour of desperation, and we need your help.”
Members of the public with any information are urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or visit the FBI Tucson Field Office. The investigation remains active, with law enforcement continuing to analyze evidence and follow leads.
This case has drawn nationwide attention, highlighting the challenges of missing persons investigations and the critical role of surveillance technology. For ongoing updates, the public can refer to official releases from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department. Additional resources on missing persons cases are available through the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
As the search continues, the community and law enforcement remain hopeful for Nancy Guthrie’s safe return.
