New Mexico Woman Charged After Allegedly Drowning Newborn in Portable Toilet
LAS CRUCES, N.M. — A 38-year-old New Mexico woman has been charged with intentional child abuse resulting in death after authorities say she gave birth in a portable toilet and drowned her newborn in the holding tank. Sonia Cristal Jimenez arrived at Memorial Medical Center in Las Cruces on the night of February 7, appearing as though she had just delivered a baby, but notably without an infant in her possession, according to a press release from the Las Cruces Police Department.
Hospital staff immediately alerted police after noticing the unusual circumstances. Jimenez’s boyfriend informed officers that they had been at Burn Lake, approximately six miles from the hospital, and that Jimenez had used a portable toilet there. Responding officers conducted a search of the area and discovered the newborn girl deceased inside the holding tank of the portable toilet.
Investigators believe Jimenez gave birth in the portable toilet, severed the umbilical cord, and then left the infant in the holding tank where the child drowned. The grim discovery has led to felony charges against Jimenez, who is now facing serious legal consequences for the alleged act.
