Oregon Rafter Survives Five Days in Wilderness Before Coast Guard Rescue
GRANTS PASS, Ore. — A 26-year-old rafter who disappeared during a trip on Oregon’s Illinois River was rescued after surviving alone in the wilderness for five days, officials confirmed Saturday. Gabriel Vaughn was last seen around 4:15 p.m. on Monday near Greenwall Rapids while rafting with a group, according to the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office. Wearing a blue dry suit, helmet, and life jacket, Vaughn told others he planned to hike into the woods toward the Chetco drainage before he vanished.
When Vaughn failed to return, a multi-agency search operation was launched involving the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team and the U.S. Coast Guard. The Coast Guard deployed helicopters to scour the rugged terrain and swift waters of the Illinois River, a tributary known for its challenging rapids and dense forest.
After five days of relentless searching, rescuers located Vaughn injured approximately two miles downstream from where he disappeared. He was airlifted to safety by helicopter and transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. Authorities have not disclosed the extent of his injuries but confirmed he is in stable condition.
