Afghan National Charged in D.C. National Guard Shooting Faces Death Penalty

25 December 2025 U.S. News

WASHINGTON, D.C. — New federal charges have been filed against Rahmanullah Lakanwal, the Afghan national accused of fatally shooting a National Guard member and seriously injuring another in Washington, D.C., last month. These charges open the possibility of the death penalty in a case that has drawn intense scrutiny from law enforcement and the community.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia announced that Lakanwal now faces charges of transporting a firearm in interstate commerce with intent to commit a felony, as well as transporting a stolen firearm across state lines. These new indictments come in addition to his existing charges, which include first-degree murder while armed, assault with intent to kill while armed, and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.

U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro emphasized the gravity of the case, stating, “The transfer of this case from Superior Court to District Court ensures that we can undertake the serious, deliberate and weighty analysis required to determine if the death penalty is appropriate here.” She further acknowledged the profound impact on the victims’ families, noting, “Sarah Beckstrom was just 20 years old when she was killed, and her parents are now forced to endure the holiday season without their daughter.” Beckstrom was the National Guard member who lost her life in the November 26 attack, while Andrew Wolfe, who was also shot, remains hospitalized with a long recovery ahead.

According to an affidavit released by the FBI, the weapon used in the shooting was a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver stolen from a Seattle residence in May 2023. Investigators revealed that the firearm was handed to Lakanwal on November 14 at his home in Bellingham, Washington, by an acquaintance who believed Lakanwal needed it for personal protection while working as a rideshare driver. The following day, Lakanwal purchased additional .357 caliber ammunition from a local sporting goods store.

Federal authorities have highlighted Lakanwal’s prior work with U.S. government entities in Afghanistan, including the Central Intelligence Agency, underscoring the complex background of the suspect. The case continues to be closely monitored by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Medical updates indicate that Andrew Wolfe is making “extraordinary progress” and has regained the ability to breathe independently, according to statements from his doctors. Meanwhile, the investigation remains active as authorities gather evidence and prepare for potential trial proceedings.

The case has also raised questions about firearm trafficking and interstate gun transport, issues that are under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The new charges reflect the federal government’s intent to pursue the most serious penalties available under the law.

As the community grapples with the tragedy, officials have reiterated their commitment to justice and support for the victims’ families during this difficult holiday season. The ongoing legal process will determine the full scope of consequences faced by Lakanwal as the nation watches closely.
