Americans Across the Country Use Firearms in Self-Defense Amid Rising Violence in 2025

30 December 2025 U.S. News

DALLAS, Texas — Throughout 2025, Americans have increasingly exercised their right to self-defense with firearms, responding to violent threats that made headlines nationwide. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, the United States recorded 14,249 gun-related deaths and 25,606 injuries as of December 23, with 1,119 shootings classified as justifiable self-defense incidents. These cases, protected under various state laws permitting the use of lethal force in life-threatening situations, highlight a complex and often contentious aspect of American gun culture.

In one of the most widely reported incidents, a Texas donut shop owner fatally shot an armed robber during an early-morning holdup in May. Authorities confirmed no charges were filed against the shop owner, who acted to protect his business and himself. This case exemplifies the challenges faced by small business owners amid rising crime rates, as well as the legal protections afforded to those who defend their property.

Meanwhile, in Wayne, Michigan, a church security guard prevented a potential mass shooting in June. Brian Browning, 31, armed with an AR-15-style rifle and carrying 500 rounds of ammunition, attempted to open fire on worshippers at CrossPointe Community Church. Witnesses reported Browning wearing tactical gear and opening fire just feet from the church doors. Despite being hit in the leg, a member of the security team, Jay Trombley, returned fire and fatally shot Browning, halting the attack and likely saving many lives. Investigators later determined Browning was experiencing a severe mental health crisis, with social media posts revealing radicalized religious views. The Federal Bureau of Investigation continues to emphasize the importance of mental health interventions in preventing such tragedies.

In another notable case, a Virginia homeowner confronted and shot two men who claimed to be police officers but were later identified as imposters attempting a home invasion. The homeowner’s quick response prevented what could have escalated into a deadly encounter. This incident underscores the dangers posed by criminals impersonating law enforcement and the necessity for vigilance and preparedness among citizens.

The rise in self-defense shootings has sparked renewed debate over gun laws and public safety. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives reports that while gun violence remains a significant issue, the lawful use of firearms in self-defense is a critical component of American jurisprudence and constitutional rights. Various states have enacted “Stand Your Ground” and “Castle Doctrine” laws that provide legal protections for individuals defending themselves in their homes or public spaces.

Experts caution, however, that the line between justified self-defense and unlawful use of force can be thin and highly situational. The Department of Justice continues to investigate shootings where the circumstances remain unclear, ensuring accountability while respecting citizens’ rights.

As 2025 draws to a close, these incidents reflect a nation grappling with violence and the complex realities of self-protection. From small businesses to places of worship and private homes, armed Americans have taken decisive action to defend themselves and their communities, often under harrowing conditions. The ongoing dialogue surrounding gun rights, public safety, and mental health will likely shape policies and public opinion in the years ahead.
