Students at La Perouse Public School honored Matilda with the Indigenous nickname “wuri wuri,” meaning “the little ray of sunshine,” reflecting the deep impact she had on her community. Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, who lost his son-in-law in the attack, spoke at the funeral, highlighting the strength and empathy shown by Matilda’s family during their shared grief.
Matilda’s parents, Valentyna and Michael, immigrated from Ukraine and chose her name to symbolize gratitude for their new life in Australia. Michael expressed to The Guardian that Matilda represented hope and new beginnings for their family.
The Bondi Beach attack has prompted calls for tighter gun laws and increased vigilance against terrorism.
