SYDNEY, Australia — Australian authorities detained seven men on Thursday during coordinated anti-terror raids in Sydney’s southwest, just as the nation mourned the youngest victim of the recent deadly attack at Bondi Beach. The operation, conducted by New South Wales police, unfolded in Liverpool on George Street, where tactical units acted on intelligence suggesting a violent act was imminent.

According to an official statement from the New South Wales Police Force, officers intercepted two vehicles linked to the investigation. The men, currently assisting police inquiries, were reportedly believed to be en route to Bondi Beach, though authorities have clarified that no direct connection has been established between this group and the Hanukkah attack that claimed 15 lives, including children.

The raids come amid a somber day in Sydney, where the funeral for 10-year-old Matilda was held. Matilda, the youngest victim of the Bondi Beach shooting, was remembered as a “bright and loving soul” by her teacher, Irina Goodhew, who told the Sydney Morning Herald that Matilda’s legacy is one of kindness and compassion.

Students at La Perouse Public School honored Matilda with the Indigenous nickname “wuri wuri,” meaning “the little ray of sunshine,” reflecting the deep impact she had on her community. Rabbi Yehoram Ulman, who lost his son-in-law in the attack, spoke at the funeral, highlighting the strength and empathy shown by Matilda’s family during their shared grief.

Matilda’s parents, Valentyna and Michael, immigrated from Ukraine and chose her name to symbolize gratitude for their new life in Australia. Michael expressed to The Guardian that Matilda represented hope and new beginnings for their family.

The Bondi Beach attack has prompted calls for tighter gun laws and increased vigilance against terrorism. The Australian Department of Home Affairs continues to work closely with law enforcement agencies to monitor threats and prevent further violence. Thursday’s arrests underscore the ongoing efforts to safeguard communities and disrupt potential terror plots.

As Sydney grieves, the swift police response and community solidarity reflect a nation determined to heal and protect its citizens from future harm.
