Biff Poggi Embraces Interim Role, Eyes Full-Time Michigan Head Coaching Job

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — As the Michigan Wolverines prepare for the Citrus Bowl against Texas on New Year’s Eve, interim head coach Biff Poggi is making it clear that his time at the helm may not be temporary for long. Following the dismissal of former head coach Sherrone Moore earlier this month amid allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, Poggi stepped into the spotlight. Though he lacks extensive Power Four head coaching experience, the 65-year-old veteran says the opportunity has rekindled his passion and desire to lead Michigan’s storied football program on a permanent basis.

“It has sparked it. I’ve enjoyed this,” Poggi said in a recent interview. “It’s been a great challenge, but it’s nice being back as close to the kids as you are when you’re doing this.” Poggi’s coaching career spans decades, but his only Division I FBS head coaching stint was at Charlotte, and he has never led a Power Four program before. Nevertheless, his deep familiarity with Michigan football — having served as a football analyst for the Wolverines in 2016 and returning in 2021 as associate head coach and advisor to then-head coach Jim Harbaugh — gives him a unique perspective.

Michigan’s athletic director, Warde Manuel, has conducted multiple interviews with Poggi as part of the search for the program’s next permanent leader. Poggi confirmed he is among the candidates being seriously considered. “I’m being considered. I’ve had multiple interviews, multiple conversations,” he said. “Nobody knows what’s going to happen. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I just appreciate being considered, and we’ll see what happens.”

Despite the uncertainty, Poggi’s confidence is clear. When asked what sets him apart from other candidates, he responded succinctly: “Because I know what the hell I’m doing.” His familiarity with the Michigan program and its culture is a significant selling point, especially as the Wolverines seek stability after a turbulent offseason.

The university’s decision to part ways with Moore came swiftly after an internal investigation revealed the coach’s inappropriate relationship with a staff member, a violation that led to his firing with cause. This abrupt change thrust Poggi into the interim role, a position he has embraced with enthusiasm despite the challenges.

Michigan’s upcoming Citrus Bowl appearance marks a critical moment for Poggi to showcase his leadership on a national stage. The Wolverines, a program with a rich football tradition and passionate fan base, are eager to move forward and find a coach who can restore stability and success.

As Michigan’s leadership evaluates its options, Poggi’s candidacy exemplifies the complexities of coaching hires in major college football programs, where experience, familiarity, and leadership qualities must align to meet high expectations. Whether Poggi will be the next permanent head coach remains to be seen, but his renewed passion and commitment to the Wolverines are unmistakable.
