Border Agents Seize $6.8 Million in Cocaine Hidden in Valentine’s Day Flower Shipment

15 February 2026 U.S. News

LAREDO, Texas — In a significant interdiction during the Valentine’s Day week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo uncovered more than 500 pounds of alleged cocaine concealed within a shipment of fresh flowers destined for the United States. The seizure, valued at approximately $6.8 million, represents over 190,000 potentially lethal doses of narcotics removed from circulation.

The operation unfolded when a 2018 T3 International tractor-trailer carrying roses was referred for inspection by a CBP officer. Utilizing a combination of canine detection and a non-intrusive inspection system, agents discovered 211 tightly packed bundles containing a total of 516.76 pounds of suspected cocaine hidden among the floral cargo.

Laredo Port of Entry Director Alberto Flores emphasized the importance of the seizure in a press release, stating that the “substantial” bust highlights the unwavering commitment of CBP officers in protecting the border and preventing dangerous drugs from entering American communities. This latest interdiction reflects ongoing efforts by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to disrupt narcotics trafficking at one of the busiest commercial crossings on the southern border.

The World Trade Bridge is a critical gateway for trade between the United States and Mexico, handling thousands of shipments daily. Drug traffickers frequently exploit commercial shipments to smuggle illicit substances, making vigilant inspections essential. The use of flower shipments is a known tactic, as narcotics concealed in such cargo can evade casual detection due to the high volume and perishable nature of the goods.

This bust aligns with broader enforcement initiatives led by the Department of Homeland Security and its partner agencies to combat the flow of illegal drugs across the border. The seizure comes amid heightened concerns over the public health impact of cocaine and other narcotics flooding U.S. markets, contributing to addiction and violence.

Federal authorities continue to investigate the source and intended distribution network for the intercepted cocaine. The operation also underscores the critical role of technology and trained canine units in enhancing border security. According to CBP data, interdictions of narcotics at the southern border have increased in recent years, reflecting both improved detection capabilities and the persistent challenge posed by transnational criminal organizations.

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency often collaborates with CBP in follow-up investigations, aiming to dismantle trafficking networks and prosecute those responsible. This seizure is a reminder of the complex and dangerous nature of border security work, particularly in major commercial hubs like Laredo.

As the nation grapples with the ongoing drug crisis, such enforcement actions are vital in disrupting supply chains and protecting communities from the devastating effects of narcotics. The Laredo Port of Entry remains a frontline in the battle against drug smuggling, with officers maintaining vigilance amid the constant flow of goods and people.
