Deadly Terror Attack at Bondi Beach Hanukkah Celebration Claims 15 Lives, Including Child and Holocaust Survivor
SYDNEY, Australia — A horrific terror attack unfolded during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, leaving at least 15 people dead, including a 10-year-old girl and an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor. Australian authorities have identified the assailants as a father and son, whose actions were reportedly inspired by ISIS ideology.
Among the victims was Matilda Britvan, a bright and joyful 10-year-old described by her family as “a sun” who brought light wherever she went. Matilda was attending the event with her six-year-old sister when the gunmen opened fire. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries. A GoFundMe page set up by her teacher honors her memory, emphasizing her compassion and spirit.
Also killed was Alex Kleytman, an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor from Ukraine, who died shielding his wife Larisa from the gunfire. The couple had been celebrating Hanukkah together when the attack began. Larisa Kleytman, also a survivor, recounted how her husband protected her in the chaos. The couple leaves behind 11 grandchildren. The international Jewish organization Chabad confirmed Alex’s death and highlighted his heroism.
Rabbi Eli Schlanger, assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi and a key organizer of the “Chanukah by the Sea” event, was among those killed. He had served the Bondi community for 18 years, providing spiritual leadership and support.
Australian police responded swiftly, fatally shooting the father at the scene while the son was wounded and taken into custody for medical treatment. Authorities continue to investigate the attack as an act of antisemitic terrorism. The Australian government has condemned the attack and vowed to strengthen security measures to protect vulnerable communities.
This tragedy has drawn international attention, with public figures and organizations condemning the violence. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and other global agencies have expressed solidarity with Australia in combating terrorism inspired by extremist groups.
The attack has also reignited discussions about the rise of antisemitic violence worldwide. The Anti-Defamation League has called for increased vigilance and community support to prevent such atrocities.
As Sydney mourns the loss of innocent lives, including a child and survivors of one of history’s darkest chapters, the global community stands united against hatred and violence. The victims’ families and the Bondi community face a long road to recovery, honoring those lost while seeking justice and peace.
