Denmark Bolsters Military Presence in Greenland Amid U.S. Pressure
NUUK, Greenland — Denmark has significantly increased its military deployment to Greenland, sending additional troops to the Arctic territory in response to heightened tensions with the United States. The move follows a series of provocative statements by President Donald Trump, who recently questioned Denmark’s ability to secure Greenland from foreign threats posed by Russia and China.
On Monday night, a “substantial contribution” of Danish soldiers arrived at Greenland’s primary international airport, according to the Danish Armed Forces. Maj. Gen. Søren Andersen, head of Denmark’s Arctic Command, confirmed that roughly 100 troops have already been stationed in Nuuk, the island’s capital, with further deployments planned for Kangerlussuaq in western Greenland. The reinforcements underscore Denmark’s commitment to maintaining sovereignty over the strategically vital territory amid growing geopolitical competition in the Arctic region.
President Trump’s public assertions, including a January 18 post on Truth Social, accused Denmark of failing to adequately protect Greenland from encroachment by Russia and China. This rhetoric has intensified a diplomatic dispute between Washington and Copenhagen, with Trump pressing for U.S. control or ownership of the island. The White House has urged cooler heads to prevail, emphasizing the importance of NATO and allied cooperation in Arctic security.
