Detroit Unveils Long-Awaited RoboCop Statue After Nearly 15 Years of Effort
DETROIT, Mich. — After nearly a decade and a half of anticipation, an imposing 11-foot-tall bronze statue of RoboCop, the beloved science fiction hero, has been installed in Detroit’s Eastern Market. The 2.5-ton sculpture, crafted by Detroit artist Giorgio Gikas, depicts the character as portrayed by Peter Weller in the 1987 cult classic film. It now stands proudly outside the Free Age Production Studio, a location that has quickly become a magnet for fans and curious visitors.
The journey to this moment began in 2011 when then-Mayor Dave Bing responded to a social media suggestion about erecting a RoboCop statue in the city. Although Bing initially dismissed the idea, stating there were “no plans” for such a monument, the exchange ignited a grassroots campaign driven by local enthusiasts determined to bring the vision to life.
Community arts leader Brandon Walley, president of Imagination Station, and Jerry Paffendorf, CEO of Loveland Technologies, spearheaded the effort by launching a Kickstarter campaign that successfully raised over $67,000. Their dedication ensured the project moved forward despite numerous hurdles, including securing legal permissions from MGM, the rights holder of the RoboCop character.
Completed in 2017, the statue’s installation was delayed for years due to these clearance issues and the search for an appropriate site. Now, with the sculpture firmly in place, plans are underway for an official unveiling ceremony that organizers hope will feature an appearance by Peter Weller himself.
Jim Toscano, owner of Free Age Production Studio, expressed enthusiasm about the statue’s arrival, telling MLive, “I love it. It looks great, it’s super impressive and it has already brought a lot of nice people around.” The statue stands not only as a tribute to a fictional hero but also as a symbol of Detroit’s enduring spirit and its rich connection to the film industry.
RoboCop, set in a dystopian Detroit, has long been intertwined with the city’s identity, reflecting themes of resilience and justice. The installation of this statue adds to Detroit’s growing roster of public artworks that celebrate its cultural heritage and creative community.
