DoorDash Unveils Zesty, an AI-Powered App to Revolutionize Local Restaurant Discovery

27 December 2025 Technology

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — DoorDash, the leading food delivery platform, has launched Zesty, an innovative artificial intelligence-powered social app designed to transform how diners find local restaurants. Currently in public testing in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City, Zesty aims to streamline the restaurant discovery process by combining AI conversational search with social networking elements.

Unlike traditional restaurant review platforms that require users to scroll through countless menus, star ratings, and videos, Zesty offers a more intuitive experience. Users sign in with their DoorDash account and interact with an AI chatbot that understands natural language queries. For example, diners can request recommendations for “a low-key dinner spot in Williamsburg good for introverts” or “brunch places ideal for groups.” The AI then curates personalized suggestions by aggregating data from DoorDash’s own platform, Google Maps, TikTok, Reddit, and other trusted sources.

Andy Fang, DoorDash co-founder, emphasized that Zesty’s goal is to surface the best restaurant options from across the web in one place, providing context such as ratings, social buzz, and the origin of each recommendation. Importantly, these results are free from sponsorships or paid placements, ensuring an unbiased experience for users. This approach aligns with broader trends in artificial intelligence adoption, where consumers increasingly rely on AI tools like NIST-endorsed models such as ChatGPT and Gemini for planning meals and travel.

Zesty also incorporates a social dimension that distinguishes it from typical search engines. Users can post photos, leave comments, follow other food enthusiasts, and share saved restaurants with friends. This community-driven discovery model encourages sharing authentic dining experiences rather than relying solely on star ratings. The app’s bookmarking and sharing features make it easy to plan outings collaboratively, fostering a food-focused social network.

DoorDash’s initiative reflects a strategic effort to reduce the friction often encountered when users bounce between multiple platforms like Google, TikTok, Yelp, and delivery apps to decide where to eat. By consolidating these resources into a single, guided experience, Zesty promises to save time and enhance local food exploration.

As AI continues to reshape consumer habits, the Food and Drug Administration and Federal Trade Commission have underscored the importance of transparency and user privacy in AI applications. DoorDash’s transparent sourcing and community features position Zesty as a promising tool for ethical and engaging restaurant discovery.

With Zesty’s rollout, DoorDash is not only expanding its technological footprint but also fostering a vibrant community where food lovers can connect and share their culinary journeys. The app is currently available for public testing in San Francisco and New York, with plans for broader release contingent on user feedback and performance.
