19 December 2025 World

SYDNEY, Australia — In the wake of the devastating terror attack at Bondi Beach during a Hanukkah celebration, families of the victims have come forward with moving tributes, expressing profound grief and honoring the lives of their loved ones lost in the tragedy. The attack, which left 15 people dead, has shaken the local community and drawn international attention to the ongoing threat of terrorism inspired by extremist groups like ISIS.

The assailants, identified as a father and son, carried out the attack on December 14. The father was killed at the scene, while the son was apprehended by police, receiving medical treatment before facing multiple charges, including 15 counts of murder. Authorities believe the attack was motivated by extremist ideology, highlighting the global reach of terror networks.

Among those killed was Marika Pogany, 82, a beloved member of COA Sydney, a volunteer organization serving Jewish seniors. Pogany’s family described her as a “beautiful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and steadfast friend,” whose warmth and energy touched countless lives. Having emigrated from Czechoslovakia in 1968, she became a proud Australian citizen and devoted much of her life to community service, delivering meals and assisting those in need. “Though she is gone, her light will continue to shine brightly through the family and friends who were so blessed to have her in their lives,” her family said.

Adam Smyth, 50, was another victim whose family shared a heartfelt tribute. A father of four and husband to Katrina, Smyth was enjoying a walk on Bondi Beach with his wife when the attack unfolded. His family expressed the immeasurable pain of their loss and recalled his love for family, travel, and sports, including his passion for English Premier League clubs. “No words can describe the pain of our loss,” they said.

The attack has prompted renewed calls for vigilance and enhanced security measures. The New South Wales Government has been working closely with law enforcement agencies to support victims’ families and strengthen counterterrorism efforts. The Australian Federal Police continue to investigate the incident, focusing on the radicalization pathways that led to the attack.

Community leaders and organizations have also rallied to provide support. COA Sydney, the group with which Pogany was affiliated, has emphasized the importance of unity and resilience in the face of such violence. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has noted the significance of international cooperation in combating terrorism, underscoring that attacks like the one at Bondi Beach are part of a broader global challenge.

As families mourn, the broader community reflects on the fragility of peace and the enduring impact of such acts of terror. The victims’ stories remind us of the human cost behind headlines and statistics, and the need for continued efforts to prevent future tragedies.
