Federal Investigation Launched After Waymo Autonomous Vehicle Strikes Child in Santa Monica School Zone
SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Federal safety regulators have initiated a preliminary investigation into Waymo, the autonomous vehicle subsidiary of Alphabet, after one of its self-driving cars struck a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica. The incident occurred on January 23 during the busy morning drop-off period, raising urgent questions about the safety of automated driving systems in sensitive environments like school zones.
According to documents released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the crash took place within two blocks of the school where multiple children were present, and a crossing guard was on duty. Several vehicles were double-parked along the street, creating a complex and congested environment. Investigators report that the child ran into the roadway from behind a double-parked SUV while heading toward the school, and was subsequently struck by the Waymo vehicle.
