Florida Man Kills Wife, Shoots Stepdaughter Over NFL Game Dispute Before Taking Own Life
LAKELAND, Fla. — A family gathering turned deadly in Polk County earlier this week when a man fatally shot his wife and wounded his stepdaughter following an argument over a National Football League game, authorities reported. The man then took his own life, leaving a community grappling with the aftermath of the tragedy.
According to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, the incident occurred on December 22 after Jason Kenney, 47, and his wife Crystal Kenney engaged in a heated dispute about the Monday night NFL game between the San Francisco 49ers and the Indianapolis Colts. The argument escalated after Crystal suggested that Jason turn off the game, prompting a violent response.
Jason Kenney, who had been drinking, fatally shot his wife and then wounded her 13-year-old daughter in the shoulder and face. The young girl is currently recovering in a hospital, while Crystal Kenney was found dead at the scene. The couple’s 12-year-old son, who was also present during the shooting, was unharmed and managed to run to a neighbor’s house to call 911. Deputies responding to the call discovered the grim scene inside the family home.
Sheriff Judd described the harrowing moments, recounting that the girl pleaded with her stepfather not to shoot her, but he fired regardless. The family’s 1-year-old daughter was found asleep and unharmed in her crib.
Following the shooting, Jason Kenney fled the residence and contacted his sister in upstate New York, admitting he had “done something” wrong and indicating it would be their last conversation. He then drove to his father’s home, where law enforcement officers located him. As deputies attempted to take him into custody, Kenney fatally shot himself inside a shed.
During the investigation, authorities discovered a note written by Crystal Kenney addressed to her husband. The note implored him to seek help for his struggles with alcohol and cocaine use, stating, “You’re drinking, you’re using cocaine again. This is not the way the family should be. You need God,” Sheriff Judd said.
The surviving children have been placed in the care of their grandparents. Sheriff Judd expressed deep sorrow over the destruction of what appeared to be a loving family, noting the poignant sight of a Christmas tree surrounded by presents in the home, a stark contrast to the violence that unfolded.
This tragic event underscores the broader challenges of domestic violence and substance abuse that law enforcement agencies continue to confront. The Federal Bureau of Investigation highlights that domestic violence remains a significant issue nationwide, with many cases escalating to fatal outcomes.
Community resources such as the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) provide vital support for individuals struggling with addiction and mental health issues, emphasizing the importance of early intervention.
Local authorities encourage anyone experiencing domestic conflict or substance abuse problems to seek help through available channels. The Office on Violence Against Women offers resources aimed at preventing such tragedies and supporting victims.
As the investigation continues, Polk County officials reaffirm their commitment to addressing the root causes of violence and supporting affected families during this difficult holiday season.
