Florida Salvation Army Bell Ringer Arrested After Alleged Assault on Publix Manager

27 December 2025 U.S. News

STUART, Fla. — A holiday tradition turned violent this Christmas week when Steven Pavlik, a 63-year-old Salvation Army bell ringer, was arrested after allegedly attacking a Publix store manager with his donation kettle tripod. Authorities say Pavlik was intoxicated while on duty outside the grocery store in Stuart, Florida, and became aggressive toward shoppers before the confrontation escalated.

According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, Pavlik was stationed outside the Publix collecting donations when he began “aggressively” harassing passersby, creating a significant disturbance. When the store manager stepped outside to address the situation, Pavlik allegedly attempted to “impale” him with the tripod used to hold the Salvation Army’s donation kettle.

Fortunately, the manager was not injured during the incident. Pavlik fled the scene but was later located at his home and taken into custody. He faces charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest. The sheriff’s office described the episode as a dramatic fall from festive goodwill to criminal conduct, stating, “drunk ringing, belligerent tidings and assault took him from bell duty to booking blotter.”

The Salvation Army is known for its annual holiday fundraising efforts, often relying on volunteers to ring bells and collect donations to support community services. The incident in Stuart has raised concerns about the safety and conduct of volunteers during these campaigns. While neither Publix nor the Salvation Army immediately responded to requests for comment, the episode underscores the importance of maintaining professionalism and sobriety in public-facing charitable roles.

Law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, classify aggravated assault as a serious offense involving an attack that causes or threatens serious bodily injury. Local authorities acted swiftly to apprehend Pavlik, ensuring public safety in the aftermath.

Incidents like this highlight the challenges faced by retail establishments and community organizations during the busy holiday season. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration provides guidelines for maintaining safe environments for both employees and volunteers, emphasizing the need for vigilance and proper conduct.

As the community reflects on this unsettling event, it serves as a reminder that holiday goodwill must be paired with responsibility. The Salvation Army’s mission to aid those in need depends on the trust and safety of the public and its volunteers alike.

For more information on public safety and crime prevention, residents can consult resources provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local law enforcement agencies.
