Gas Prices Fall to Four-Year Low, Boosting Holiday Travel Across the U.S.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — This holiday season, millions of Americans are enjoying a welcome reprieve at the pump as gas prices have fallen to their lowest levels in four years, encouraging a surge in Christmas travel nationwide. According to data compiled by AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline across the country dropped to $2.855 on December 22, 2025, significantly easing the financial burden for travelers during the busy holiday period.
The American Automobile Association projects that approximately 122.4 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles from home between December 20 and January 1. Of those, over 109 million plan to travel by car, while around 8 million will take to the skies for domestic flights. This marks a notable increase in road travel compared to previous years, largely attributed to the more affordable fuel costs.
Gas prices have seen a remarkable decline from their peak in mid-2022, when the national average soared to $5.016 per gallon on June 14. The current average represents a significant drop from the $3.04 per gallon recorded in 2024, offering holiday travelers substantial savings. Eleven states currently boast gas prices below the national average, with Oklahoma leading at just $2.293 per gallon.
Other states with notably low prices include Iowa at $2.430, Arkansas at $2.418, Colorado at $2.441, Texas at $2.467, and Wisconsin at $2.472. These lower prices are expected to encourage even more motorists to embark on road trips this holiday season.
Transportation experts highlight that the decline in fuel costs is providing families with extra financial flexibility, allowing more spending on gifts, dining, and other seasonal activities. The AAA continues to monitor travel trends and fuel prices closely, providing real-time updates to assist consumers in planning their trips.
Meanwhile, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics underscores the importance of affordable fuel in supporting the nation’s mobility and economy, especially during peak travel periods like Christmas. The agency’s data reflects a steady increase in vehicle miles traveled correlating with the drop in gas prices.
As holiday travelers prepare for their journeys, the U.S. Department of Transportation advises motorists to stay informed about road conditions and safety tips to ensure smooth and secure trips. Additionally, the Federal Aviation Administration reports a stable outlook for air travel, with millions expected to fly despite the dominance of car travel this season.
With gas prices at a four-year low and travel plans on the rise, this Christmas promises to be one of the most mobile in recent memory, allowing families and friends across the country to reconnect without the heavy cost at the pump.
