Georgia Unveils ‘America First’ License Plate Alongside America 250 Commemorative Design
ATLANTA, Ga. — As the United States nears its 250th birthday, Georgia has introduced a new “America First” license plate, joining a growing number of states offering patriotic vehicle plates to celebrate the nation’s milestone. The new plate, priced at $90 annually, features a bold American flag backdrop with the words “America First” prominently displayed at the bottom. This initiative was first proposed in Senate Bill 291 by Republican state Sen. Steve Gooch and was signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp in May 2025.
Senator Gooch described the plate as “a tangible expression of patriotism and putting the needs of our country at the forefront,” emphasizing its role in allowing Georgians to demonstrate national pride while highlighting issues such as economic stability, national security, and strong borders. He also noted that the plate offers supporters a way to show allegiance to former President Donald Trump and his movement with every mile driven.
Alongside the “America First” plate, Georgia is also offering a commemorative America 250 license plate for $20. This design was created by Eden Pethel, a middle school student selected through a statewide civics education campaign coordinated by the Georgia Department of Revenue (GDR). The plate features an American flag on the left and an outline of Georgia adorned with seven red stars representing key Revolutionary War sites within the state, including the Battles of Kettle Creek and Savannah.
Frank O’Connell, Georgia’s revenue commissioner, highlighted the significance of the plates, stating they provide “a meaningful way to recognize our nation’s founding and the pivotal role our state played in it.” The campaign to engage students in the design process reflects a broader effort to connect younger generations with the nation’s history and the upcoming Semiquincentennial celebration.
Georgia joins eight other states — Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Virginia — in offering commemorative America 250 plates. Michigan notably sold nearly 1,000 of its plates within the first hour of availability, underscoring strong public enthusiasm for these patriotic symbols.
The “America First” plate initiative aligns with a broader trend among states to promote patriotic messaging through vehicle registration. The plates serve not only as a source of state revenue but also as a visible statement of values and national pride on roads across the country. The Georgia Department of Revenue provides detailed information about the plates and their availability on its official website.
As the nation prepares to mark its 250th anniversary, these license plates represent more than just identification tags; they are emblems of heritage, civic engagement, and the ongoing dialogue about America’s identity and priorities. With the rollout of the “America First” plate, Georgia continues to contribute to the nationwide celebration of American history while fostering a sense of unity and pride among its residents.
