Gunmen Kill Nine in South African Tavern, Prompting Nationwide Manhunt

22 December 2025 World

BEKKERSDAL, South Africa — A brutal attack at a tavern in the Bekkersdal township, located just west of Johannesburg, left nine people dead and at least ten others wounded early Sunday morning, authorities confirmed. The incident has sparked an intense manhunt as police seek to apprehend the masked gunmen who opened fire indiscriminately on patrons at the KwaNoxolo tavern.

According to Maj. Gen. Fred Kekana, Gauteng’s acting provincial commissioner, the assailants—approximately a dozen suspects—arrived in a white mini-bus and a silver sedan before unleashing gunfire around 1 a.m. Some of the attackers concealed their identities with balaclavas and were armed with an AK-47 rifle and several 9mm pistols. Eyewitnesses reported that the gunmen continued shooting randomly as they fled the scene, with some victims targeted even on the streets outside the establishment.

The South African Police Service’s Serious and Violent Crime Investigations unit, in coordination with the Crime Detection Tracing Unit, has launched a comprehensive search for the suspects. Authorities have urged the public to come forward with any information that might aid in the investigation.

This attack is the second mass shooting targeting bars—locally known as shebeens or taverns—in South Africa within a month. Earlier this December, gunmen opened fire at an unlicensed bar near Pretoria, killing at least 12 people and injuring 13 others. These incidents have raised concerns about escalating violence in public spaces and the challenges law enforcement faces in curbing armed attacks.

The KwaNoxolo tavern shooting underscores ongoing issues with violent crime in South Africa’s townships, areas often marked by economic hardship and limited policing resources. The government has been under pressure to enhance security measures and address the root causes of such violence, including gang activity and illegal firearms trafficking.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has emphasized its commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice and has increased patrols in vulnerable communities. The official SAPS website provides updates on the investigation and safety advisories for residents.

Internationally, the incident has drawn attention to South Africa’s struggles with violent crime. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has reported on the country’s high rates of firearm-related violence, urging coordinated efforts to strengthen law enforcement and community engagement.

As families mourn the victims, many of whom were regular patrons of the KwaNoxolo tavern, the community grapples with fear and calls for justice. Local authorities have set up support services for survivors and affected families, with information available through the South African Government’s official portal.

The attack also comes amid broader discussions about public safety and human rights in South Africa. Recently, the country was excluded from the 2026 G20 Summit by the United States, citing concerns over “horrific human rights abuses,” highlighting the complex socio-political landscape in which such violent incidents occur.

As the manhunt continues, law enforcement agencies urge vigilance and cooperation from the public to prevent further tragedies. Updates on the investigation will be provided as new information becomes available.
