Illegal Immigrant Truck Driver Charged in Fatal Washington Crash After Being Released at Border

13 December 2025 U.S. News

SEATTLE, Wash. — Kamalpreet Singh, an Indian national who was apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol agents after illegally crossing into Arizona in December 2023, now faces charges of vehicular homicide in connection with a fatal crash on a Washington highway that claimed the life of 29-year-old Robert B. Pearson. Authorities say Singh was released into the United States by federal agents after his initial apprehension, a decision that has drawn renewed scrutiny amid ongoing debates over immigration enforcement.

The incident occurred on State Route 167, where Singh, driving a Freightliner semi-truck, collided with the rear of a blue 2010 Mazda 3 sedan stopped behind a white 2016 Peterbilt truck. The impact crushed the Mazda between the two large vehicles, resulting in a fire in the sedan’s engine compartment. Emergency responders quickly extinguished the flames, but Pearson, the Mazda’s driver, succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash.

Singh and the driver of the Peterbilt were unharmed. According to the Washington State Patrol, preliminary investigations have ruled out drugs and alcohol as contributing factors, though the exact cause of the collision remains under review. The Washington State Patrol continues to lead the investigation.

Singh’s immigration status and prior release have become focal points in the aftermath. He was initially detained by Border Patrol agents in Lukeville, Arizona, on December 23, 2023, after illegally crossing the border. Instead of being held, Singh was released into the country, according to sources from the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). ICE has since placed a detainer on Singh with local law enforcement in King County, Washington.

This case adds to a series of incidents involving illegal immigrant truck drivers facing charges in fatal crashes across the United States. However, officials emphasize that each case is distinct, and Singh is not connected to other similarly named individuals charged in separate incidents in California and Florida.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Border and Transportation Security divisions have faced criticism over policies that allow certain individuals apprehended at the border to be released pending further proceedings. Advocates argue that resource constraints and legal frameworks complicate detention decisions, while critics call for stricter enforcement to prevent public safety risks.

Local trucking industry representatives have expressed concern about the impact of illegal immigration on road safety and industry standards. Mike Kucharski, co-owner of JKC Trucking, described the situation as a “shockwave” affecting both public safety and commercial trucking operations.

As the investigation proceeds, authorities urge the public to remain vigilant and await the outcome of legal proceedings. The tragic loss of Robert B. Pearson underscores the complex intersection of immigration enforcement and highway safety, a topic that continues to generate intense debate nationwide.
