Illinois Teen Crafts Record-Breaking 17.32-Foot Eiffel Tower from Toothpicks
NAPERVILLE, Ill. — At just 16 years old, Eric Klabel has once again captured global attention by constructing a towering replica of the Eiffel Tower using nothing but toothpicks and glue. Standing at an impressive 17.32 feet tall, Klabel’s creation recently earned him a Guinness World Record for the tallest toothpick sculpture in the world.
Growing up in Naperville, Klabel’s passion for building was sparked early on by his father’s career as a civil engineer. “When I was younger, I just got really, really interested in building things out of popsicle sticks,” Klabel told WGN-TV. This early fascination led to his first Guinness World Record in 2021, when, at age 12, he built a 20.2-foot tower from popsicle sticks. Although that record has since been surpassed, Klabel’s determination and creativity have only grown.
In October, he embarked on a new challenge using a much smaller and more delicate medium: toothpicks. “The annoying thing about toothpicks—compared to popsicle sticks, they’re just so incredibly tiny,” Klabel explained. Undeterred by the intricacy required, he meticulously assembled approximately 20,000 toothpicks to recreate the iconic Parisian landmark.
The feat required not only patience but also a deep understanding of structural engineering principles, a nod to his familial influences. The Eiffel Tower model stands as a testament to Klabel’s craftsmanship and dedication, capturing the imagination of enthusiasts and experts alike.
His achievement has been officially recognized by the Guinness World Records, an organization that verifies and celebrates extraordinary human accomplishments worldwide. This milestone places Klabel among a select group of young innovators who have pushed the boundaries of artistic and engineering possibilities.
Beyond the record itself, Klabel’s work highlights the intersection of art, engineering, and youthful ambition. His journey from popsicle sticks to toothpicks underscores the importance of nurturing curiosity and technical skill from an early age. For those interested in the science and engineering behind such projects, resources from the National Science Foundation offer insights into STEM education and innovation.
As Klabel continues to explore new mediums and techniques, his story serves as an inspiration to aspiring builders and creators everywhere. His record-breaking toothpick Eiffel Tower stands not just as a model of a famous monument but as a symbol of youthful ingenuity and the limitless possibilities of creativity.
