Las Vegas Raiders Fire Offensive Coordinator Chip Kelly After 11 Games

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The Las Vegas Raiders have fired offensive coordinator Chip Kelly after 11 games amid ongoing offensive difficulties, according to multiple reports. Kelly’s dismissal follows the Raiders’ 24-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, marking another disappointing performance for the team’s offense.

Kelly, who joined the Raiders after winning a national title with Ohio State, was the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL, earning an average of $6 million per season. He was hired to improve the Raiders’ offense under head coach Pete Carroll, who returned from retirement to lead the team.

Despite significant offseason investments, including acquiring veteran quarterback Geno Smith in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks and selecting running back Ashton Jeanty in the first round of the draft, the Raiders’ offense has struggled. Smith threw for 285 yards and one touchdown in the loss to Cleveland, but the team has scored 16 points or fewer in four of its last five games, all losses.

Entering Sunday’s game, the Raiders ranked third worst in the NFL in both yards per game (269) and points per game (15.5). The rushing attack, led by Jeanty, averaged just 81.4 yards per game, a disappointing output given the team’s investment in the running back.

The offensive line has also been a significant issue, with Smith having been sacked 31 times before the game against the Browns. The Browns recorded 10 sacks during the game, contributing to the Raiders’ offensive woes. Only Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward has been sacked more this season, with 45 sacks.

This firing marks the second coordinator dismissal by the Raiders in recent weeks; special teams coordinator Tom McMahon was relieved of his duties following a 10-7 loss to the Denver Broncos on Nov. 6. Owner Mark Davis and the organization decided to make the change before the end of Kelly’s first season with the team.

Kelly’s tenure with the Raiders was brief, and the team’s offensive struggles ultimately led to the decision to part ways.
