Mike White, Former Raiders Coach and College Football Leader, Dies at 89
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — Mike White, a revered figure in American football who served as head coach of the Los Angeles and Oakland Raiders and led multiple college programs, died at the age of 89. White passed away in Newport Beach, leaving behind a legacy that spanned five decades in coaching and mentoring players and coaches alike.
White’s coaching journey began shortly after his collegiate athletic career at the University of California, Berkeley, where he excelled as a four-sport athlete in the 1950s. At just 22 years old, he returned to his alma mater to begin coaching the defensive line for the Cal Golden Bears in 1958. Over six years, White helped shape the team before moving on to Stanford University, where he served as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach from 1964 to 1971.
In 1972, White returned to Berkeley to take the helm as head coach of the Golden Bears, a position he held until 1977. His leadership during this period was marked by a commitment to developing players with respect and discipline, qualities remembered fondly by former athletes such as Burl Toler Jr., who praised White’s approach as both respectful and intellectually rigorous.
White’s transition to the National Football League came in 1978 with the San Francisco 49ers, where he coached the offensive line for two seasons. Afterward, he returned to college football to lead the University of Illinois Fighting Illini as head coach from 1980 to 1987.
His NFL tenure is most notably associated with the Raiders franchise. White spent seven years with the team, including two seasons as head coach from 1995 to 1996. Prior to his head coaching role, he contributed as a quarterbacks and offensive line coach. Following his time with the Raiders, he served as an offensive assistant with the St. Louis Rams, further extending his influence in professional football.
The Raiders organization released a statement mourning White’s passing, saying, “The Raiders Family is saddened by the passing of Mike White, former head coach of the Silver and Black and a long-time NFL and college coach and mentor.
