Minnesota Governor Faces Backlash After Viral Video Questions Daycare Funding

28 December 2025 Politics

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is under intense scrutiny after a viral video surfaced showing a Minneapolis daycare center that appeared largely inactive despite reportedly receiving nearly $4 million in state funding. The footage, posted by independent reporter Nick Shirley, has sparked widespread calls from politicians and public figures demanding transparency and accountability regarding the use of state resources.

The 42-minute video, shared widely on social media platforms, captures Shirley and a companion visiting several childcare facilities, including one on Nicollet Avenue. The center, which bears a sign misspelled as “Quality Learing Center,” reportedly is meant to serve 99 children but showed no visible activity during the visit. This has raised serious concerns about potential misuse of taxpayer dollars allocated for childcare services.

Republican leaders have been vocal in their criticism. Representative Mike Lawler of New York called for immediate legal action, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “Folks need to be arrested and prosecuted and the Governor of Minnesota needs to be held accountable. Congress should hold a hearing immediately and start getting answers.” Similarly, Vice President JD Vance described the situation as emblematic of broader systemic fraud, particularly highlighting issues related to immigration and welfare programs. Vance wrote, “Politicians like it because they get power. Welfare cheats like it because they get rich. But it’s a zero sum game, and they’re stealing both money and political power from Minnesotans.”

Former President Donald Trump Jr. also weighed in, urging the public to watch the video and criticizing mainstream media for not covering the story. “This is what they’re doing to your country with your tax dollars!!!” he tweeted. Elon Musk echoed these concerns, accusing the “radical left” of exploiting government programs to secure electoral advantages and transform the political landscape.

The controversy comes amid a broader investigation into Minnesota’s management of federal social service funds. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General has reportedly begun probing the state’s use of billions in federal funding amid allegations of fraud. This inquiry follows reports of widespread Medicaid and voter fraud linked to immigrant communities in the state.

Governor Walz, who has faced mounting criticism over the state’s fraud scandal, has yet to publicly address the specific allegations raised by the video. However, Minnesota mayors and other local officials have reportedly expressed frustration, with some adopting nicknames for the governor in response to the fallout.

The daycare center’s questionable operations have also drawn attention from the Office of Child Care, which oversees childcare programs funded through the federal government. The apparent inactivity at a facility receiving substantial funding raises questions about oversight and accountability mechanisms.

As the debate intensifies, calls for congressional hearings and investigations into Minnesota’s social service programs are growing louder. The United States Congress holds the authority to summon state officials and demand transparency in the use of federal funds, a step many Republicans are urging to ensure taxpayer money is not being misappropriated.

For now, the viral video continues to fuel political tensions in Minnesota, highlighting the challenges of managing large-scale social programs and the imperative for rigorous oversight. As investigations proceed, Minnesotans and observers nationwide await clarity on the extent of the alleged fraud and the measures that will be taken to prevent future abuses.
