WASHINGTON, D.C. — National Guardsman Andrew Wolfe, critically wounded in a shooting near the White House on November 26, is showing encouraging signs of recovery, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Friday. Wolfe, a 24-year-old U.S. Air Force Staff Sergeant, remains hospitalized but is now “able to open both eyes,” a milestone Bondi described as nothing short of a “miracle.”

Bondi, speaking on “Fox & Friends,” emphasized the severity of Wolfe’s injuries and the long road ahead, but expressed hope for a full recovery. “From day one, his mother, Melody, said, ‘My son is going to live. My son is going to be 100%.’ And I can say this because the parents let me,” Bondi said. She recounted being present when doctors confirmed Wolfe had no blood clots following an angiogram.

Wolfe’s family has been by his side throughout, with his mother, father, siblings, and even an eight-month-old niece supporting him in the hospital. The shooting also claimed the life of another National Guardsman, Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, who was killed in the attack.

The suspect, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national, faces first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to kill while armed. The Department of Justice has announced its intention to seek the death penalty in the case. The Department of Justice is actively pursuing prosecution, underscoring the gravity of the incident.

Bondi criticized the Biden administration’s immigration policies, asserting that Lakanwal was allowed into the country with “little or no vetting.” She linked the suspect’s entry to broader concerns about national security and immigration enforcement, pledging that under former President Donald Trump’s policies, such incidents would be curtailed. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency continues to play a critical role in identifying and deporting individuals who pose threats.

The FBI is investigating possible ties between the shooter and extremist groups, highlighting concerns about domestic terrorism. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, such investigations are vital to preventing further attacks.

A makeshift memorial near Farragut West Station honors both Beckstrom and Wolfe, reflecting the community’s grief and support. Vigils and public statements have underscored the sacrifices made by National Guard members protecting the capital.

As Wolfe continues his recovery, officials and family members alike urge the public to keep him in their thoughts. Bondi’s remarks serve as a reminder of the resilience of those who serve and the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement and immigration authorities in safeguarding the nation.
