New Jersey Officer Bravely Rescues Dog from Frozen Lake
SPARTA, N.J. — In a dramatic rescue on a frigid December day, a New Jersey police officer donned specialized ice rescue gear and plunged into the freezing waters of Lake Mohawk to save a dog that had fallen through the ice. Patrolman Michael Poon of the Sparta Police Department responded swiftly after spotting the distressed animal struggling in the icy water near Rainbow Trail.
Poon carefully crawled out onto the fragile ice before plunging into the lake’s cold depths to lift the soaked and shivering canine back onto solid ground. His quick actions not only saved the dog but also ensured the safety of a second dog that had remained on the ice.
The dogs, named Sunkiss, 10, and Bruno, 4, were reunited with their owner, Chance Dobbs, who was unaware his pets had escaped. Dobbs explained that although an electric fence surrounds his property, the dogs found a weak spot and slipped out unnoticed. “Sunkiss has a history of mischief,” Dobbs told WABC-TV. “This isn’t the first time she’s taken off, but this time it was more dangerous.” He added that Sunkiss has influenced Bruno to be more adventurous, calling her a “big time instigator.”
The incident highlights the dangers pets face during winter months, especially when lakes and ponds freeze over but remain thin in spots. The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection advises pet owners to keep a close watch on animals near frozen bodies of water to prevent such accidents.
Ice rescue operations require specialized training and equipment, as the risk to rescuers is significant. Patrolman Poon’s use of ice rescue gear aligns with guidelines from the U.S. Fire Administration, which emphasizes the importance of proper gear and technique to safely conduct rescues on frozen water.
This heroic act serves as a reminder of the dedication of local law enforcement officers who often go beyond the call of duty to protect not only people but also animals in their communities. The Sparta Police Department commended Poon for his bravery and quick thinking in a potentially life-threatening situation.
For pet owners, the event underscores the importance of securing properties and being vigilant during winter months when icy conditions can pose hidden dangers. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals offers guidance on keeping pets safe during cold weather, including avoiding thin ice and ensuring pets are supervised outdoors.
Thanks to Patrolman Poon’s courage and preparedness, Sunkiss and Bruno are safe and back home, a heartwarming conclusion to a chilling ordeal.
