NEW YORK, N.Y. — Thomas Medlin, a 15-year-old boy from Long Island, has been missing since January 9 after traveling to New York City to meet an individual he met through the popular online game Roblox. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, Thomas left the Stony Brook School around 3:30 p.m. that day and hurried to the Stony Brook train station, where he boarded a train bound for Grand Central Station in Manhattan.

Detectives released a surveillance image showing Thomas at Grand Central Station around 5:30 p.m. on January 9, marking the last confirmed sighting of the teenager. Authorities and family members have expressed deep concern over his disappearance, noting that his decision to leave without informing anyone was highly uncharacteristic. Thomas’ father, James Medlin, told reporters, “I just can’t believe why he left in the first place,” while his mother added that Thomas had never before left their side without notice.

The Suffolk County Police Department continues to investigate the case and has urged anyone with information to come forward. The incident highlights ongoing concerns about the risks children face when interacting with strangers online. The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Unit frequently warns parents and guardians about the dangers of online predators and encourages vigilance.

Roblox is a widely used online platform where users can create and play games, but it has also been scrutinized for safety issues related to young users. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency advises parents to monitor children’s online activities closely and educate them about safe internet practices.

Local law enforcement agencies, including the Suffolk County Police, have coordinated efforts with New York City authorities to search for Thomas. The New York Police Department has also been involved, reviewing surveillance footage and canvassing the area around Grand Central Station.

Thomas’ disappearance underscores the importance of awareness around online interactions and the potential dangers they can pose. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children offers resources and support for families facing similar situations and continues to advocate for stronger protections for children in digital spaces.

As the search continues, Thomas’ family remains hopeful for his safe return and calls on the public to assist by sharing any relevant information with authorities. The community’s attention remains focused on this troubling case as law enforcement intensifies efforts to locate the missing teenager.
